Observation of fetal cardiac motion by M-mode ultrasonic cardiography

      Abstract

      Fetal cardiac motion in the early and late stages of pregnancy was observed by means of ultrasonic cardiography (UCG). In the earliest case, a fetal pulsation curve was recorded inside an implanted ovum of the ninth week of gestation. Various comparative studies in neonates and men have demonstrated that the fetal UCG (FUCG) in late pregnancy does record mainly the motions of fetal cardiac valves and the cardiac septum. One of the most explicit patterns of fetal UCG is due to atrioventricular valve motion. This can be identified by comparing the phase relationships between FUCG and fetal cardiac Doppler signals. From an anatomical point of view, with a study of newborn UCG, mitral valve FUCG could be distinguished from the tricuspid one in relation to the position of the cardiac septum.
