Accuracy of radionuclide localization of the placenta

      Abstract

      Numerous investigators have presented the use of radioisotopes for placental localization, but much less information exists concerning the definitive accuracy of this technique. In this connection, we determined the site of placental implantation at delivery in 60 patients who had had previous scans and point counts after injection of 5 μc of 131I-tagged human serum albumin. The anatomic correlation demonstrated a very high degree of accuracy, particularly with scanning. No low implanted placentas were misdiagnosed. The increased count rates possible with ultra-short-lived isotopes renders the test even more appealing.
