      Abstract

At the University Hospital, Lund, Sweden, laparoscopy has been routinely used as a diagnostic aid in cases of acute pelvic inflammatory disease since 1960. An evaluation of symptoms and signs of acute salpingitis based on an unselected series of 905 cases visually explored is presented. It is shown that the common way of diagnosing this disease has a limited accuracy and that the symptomatology often differs from what is generally accepted. Many salpingitis patients have few symptoms and signs of disease, while on the contrary patients with a fully developed “classical” picture of acute salpingitis may have normal Fallopian tubes on visual interpretation. By routine use of laparoscopy these diagnostic problems could be overcome. It is shown that early visual diagnosis contributes to an improved prognosis of acute salpingitis.
