      Abstract

Epidemiologic studies have implicated a venereally transmitted infectious agent such as a virus in the etiology of cervical cancer. Studies by the authors and others point to type 2 herpesvirus hominis, a genitotropic strain of this virus, as a prime suspect for a cervical carcinogen. The clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory features of genital infection with type 2 HVH, and the relationship of such infection to neonatal herpes, are reviewed.
